On the other hand, technology can be a big issue in the classroom that can cause students to be distracted and not involved in their learning. Students already spend their majority of their time behind a screen either through a phone, laptop, ipad or in front of a television for hours. “In November 2016, the American Association of Pediatrics updated their screen time guidelines for parents…recommend[ing] [the] maximum amount of time that children in different age groups spend interacting with screens”(Mohammed). Screen time should be limited because it brings serious health effects academically. For example, a seventh grade teacher Michelle Harmon said that she noticed her students “ [have] trouble… thinking through problems. "Everything is so instantaneous to kids, and they expect answers to questions right away"(Tingley). Students are not gaining critical thinking skills but losing the process of thinking through either math or reading comprehension problems. Screen time needs to be enforced on being limited in school settings. A classroom should be an enimorment where the teacher gives instructions verbally and plan interactive activities where students can talk to their peers and move around the classroom. Teachers do not realize by involving educational platforms for students to learn is actually pushing themselves away from being the teacher.
In other words, it causes “distortion of the relationship between teachers and students; isolation of students in a digital and virtual world that distances them from any from of social interactions”(Alhumaid). |
